ANFIELD NUMBERS GAME

With the new season just a fortnight or so away, Benitez's transfer business seemed to finally taking shape following the seemingly endless Alonso and Barry transfer saga. With Keane's signing imminent, Rafa must turn his attention to adding midfield creativity and possibly even a right back, following news that Arbeloa is unsettled on Merseyside and Degen requires groin surgery.

I am a traditionalist and pay close attention to squad numbers as I like them to reflect the player's position, i.e. Dossena is a left-back and should wear 3 and right'-back Finnan 2, not vice-versa! Looking at squad, we seem to lack a few key, significant, numbers:

This was surely destined for Barry - whose seemingly inevitable transfer has been plunged into doubt by Bouma's injury and Benitez's reluctance to meet O'Neill's 18m pound asking price.
VERDICT: Vacant unless Xabi is sold and we sign an alternative. Michael Johnson or Ruben de la Red?

Many papers are reporting this shirt is being saved for Robbie Keane and some pundits earlier this summer suggested it would be perfect for David Villa.
VERDICT: Rafinha jets in to provide cover for departing Arbeloa and injured Degen.

10
With Voronin being linked with a move back to Germany, Keane could wear his favourite number in the colours of his boyhood heroes but the Germans better come quick as the shop needs to start printing those Keane 10 shirts for the Irish Kopites!
VERDICT: Robbie Keane

11
Benayoun has taken Crouch's 15 shirt so legs eleven is up for grabs. Without a left-winger on the books, this must be filled a shiny new recruit (read below why!).
VERDICT: Downing
