PUB SCOUT: ANGEL LAFITA

With the imminent departure of Jermaine Pennant, the rumour mill has started to churn links to possible replacements heading to Anfield. With this season's emergence of Moroccan youngster Nabil El Zhar, Rafa may wait until this summer before replacing Pennant. A name that has been mentioned recently in the Spanish press (AS, 23/12/2008) is that of Deportivo La Coruña winger Angel Lafita. Along with several Premiership clubs, chief scout Eduardo Macia has been monitoring the progress of the 24 year old Spaniard. Pub scout has the low-down...

Lafita, is a versatile attacking midfielder who is adept on either flank and is Deportivo's top-scorer this season with 5 goals in 14 starts in all competitions. He is currently on a season-long move from Real Zaragoza, following their relegation to the Spanish Second Division. Lafita was a fan favourite at Zaragoza where he acquired the nickname "The Sword" and "The Kaka of Aragon" - high praise indeed! In July, Depor paid a reported 2m EUR for Lafita, although Zaragoza can buy back Lafita at the end of the season for 3.5m EUR if they so wish. Following rave reviews and many pundits tipping Lafita for a place in the national side, it is highly likely that Zaragoza will exercise this clause and seek to cash in on him this summer. Any talk of a January move for the player is therefore unlikely as Deportivo would be unwilling to lose their top scorer and Zaragoza cannot sell until the end of the season. Watch this space!
